In the US, the total number of inpatient hospitalizations increased by 15% from 31.7 million in 2000 to 36.5 million in 2012. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2014, there were 141.4 million emergency department visits, resulting in 11.2 million hospital admissions and 1.8 million critical care unit admissions in the US. In 2014, about 20.0 million people visited physicians' offices with cancer as the primary diagnosis, 17.8 million people visited physicians' offices, and 3.9 million people visited hospital outpatient departments due to infectious and parasitic diseases in the US.
Further, the report states that one challenge in the market is complications associated with PIVCs. The PIVCs are found to be the most common source of bacteremia and fungemia. PIVCs predispose a patient to risks of local and systemic infections such as CR-BSIs, septic thrombophlebitis, endocarditis, and other metastatic infections that include lung abscess, brain abscess, osteomyelitis, and endophthalmitis. Infiltration, phlebitis, and dislodgement are the three most common mechanical complications associated with PIVCs. The incidence of thrombophlebitis and bacterial colonization of catheters increases if short PIVCs are used for more than 72 hours.
